What is the purpose of a test point?

A test point is an IP address for a reliable host used by the Ecessa device to test for connectivity. There are several features that use test points, but the most prominent use of test points is for WAN line testing. The Ecessa device needs a method to determine if a WAN line is down beyond physical connectivity and test points are that method. By confirming connectivity to a remote network, the Ecessa can ensure that the WAN line is operational.

By default, the testing method is ICMP (ping test) to each test point but TCP can also be used (TCP port is configurable). The test passes if the device receives the specified number of responses out of the specified number of tests. The test fails if the device does not receive the specified number of responses out of the specified number of tests. If all of the test points fail, the WAN is switched to the down state. When a test point passes, the WAN will return to the up (operational) state.

The Test Interval setting is located on the Configure Services page. This setting determines how often the Ecessa device performs its WAN line testing. By default, this is set to 1 second, however, this may be considered aggressive for your company. Changing to an interval of 3 seconds is recommended for most instances.

It is important that the remote host must be able to receive and respond to the test (either ICMP or TCP). If the remote host is not reliably tested it can result with false down states as the tests fail.
