What is the difference between the “Spare Line” and “No Outbound” Advanced WAN settings?

Spare Line setting - designates the WAN line as a spare only. The WAN line will not be included in outbound or inbound load-balancing. Additionally, testing for WAN status will be disabled unless the Spare WAN Line Testing setting is enabled on the Configure Services page. Testing for spare lines is much less frequent than regular WAN line testing. The Ecessa appliance will not respond to pings and cannot be accessed by the WAN line while it is a spare.

The Spare Line setting is rarely recommended. However, the Spare Line setting may prove to be ideal in a scenario such as a WAN line is to be used only in the event all other WANs are down and is paid for based on the amount of bandwidth consumed.

No Outbound setting – outbound load-balancing is disabled. The WAN line will still be included in inbound load-balancing (via Authoritative DNS) and will continue to perform WAN testing the same intervals as non-spare WAN lines. The Ecessa appliance will continue to respond to pings and can still be accessed over the WAN line while it is configured for No Outbound. Additionally, static routes override the No Outbound setting so outbound traffic can still be sent over this WAN line with the No Outbound setting enabled.

If inbound load-balancing is not desired with a No Outbound WAN line, any Load Balanced Host Records configured under Authoritative DNS will need to be changed to “Redundancy Only” which will limit which IP addresses the Ecessa appliance will use to respond to DNS queries. The IP address from the preferred WAN line(s) should listed before the IP address from the No Outbound WAN line.
